An essential aspect of this project is that it breaks down barriers: social barriers, cultural barriers, language barriers and stereotypes. By pairing schools chosen for their differences, students experience genuine communication and discover what they can actually achieve when they work with others towards a solution. They learn to work within varied groups to achieve a goal – together. This broadens their minds and makes them more responsible.

Should this learning experience be extended to all students? I’d certainly say ‘Yes!’
And, I even dare to say that this approach should be integrated, as much as possible,
into the curriculum and into our school culture. 

Some of my students have become more self-confident. Participating in the first two workshops gave them the courage to apply for the “Negotiation Leaders” workshops. They feel very proud about following the workshops and feel less shy to speak English in class.

I have noticed that the students who took part in the project are less stressed when they have to express themselves. Besides, they are more willing to reach an agreement. It’s no longer just about getting their way. They understand that negotiating is all about a win-win solution.

Students learn how to negotiate in a creative way, which is useful at school, and also at home. They are focusing on the activities, and meanwhile their English is also improving. They are less afraid to speak English (or another language in general) with their peers.
